Optoliners were originally designed as precision high-resolution (70% MTF @ 50-75 lp/mm) testing devices for film cameras, TV cameras and image intensifier systems, with various models covering sensor sizes from 8mm to 40mm. Precision lenses project a distortion-free (<1%) image of a range of test patterns onto the sensor with a high degree of illumination uniformity (>96%). Available test patterns allow testing of resolution (as a function of contrast and illumination level if desired), linearity, distortion, sensitivity and color registration. Optoliners are suitable for any optical application requiring precision of a test pattern onto a target, including modern CCD or CMOS detectors.
A quasi-integrating sphere illumination system illuminates the chosen test pattern, which is projected at a fixed distance from the Optoliner rear mount, with this fixed distance varying with Model Type.  The rear mounts of these units were originally supplied to fit various analog film and TV cameras, so many are no longer relevant. These Optoliners have been modified to make them more adaptable for laboratory and testing use; each has a standard 42mmx1mm male T-thread. The back focal distances (distance from rear of T-mount to focal plane) are listed in the Table below, together with the range of focus.
The Optoliner light sources use 3-6 light bulbs (depending on Model number), and are powered by an Optoliner power supply (42-55V).  The bulbs used are available, though difficult to find, but all these units come with spare bulbs. Two of the units come with a foldable support stand.
Unlike Optoliners sometimes offered on eBay by Surplus houses, these units have been fully checked and tested on an optical bench.
A Price List from Oct., 2000 shows that an Optoliner with Illumination Source, Power Supply, and Camera Adapter then sold for over 00. And this did not include Test Pattern Slides - the price of these ranged from 5 for ND filters, over 0 for Resolution Patterns, and up to 40 for Grey Scale and Color Bar Charts.
The Optoliner is still sold today (google “Optoliner” for full description, photographs, etc.). Units on eBay (typically from Surplus houses) usually have an asking price of -3K. All units offered for sale here are the same price.

These are high-quality (and expensive) targets (see Table from Year 2000 Price List), and are offered here at 15-20% of Year 2000 List. You can select as many slides as required; email me with your selection after purchase of an Optoliner, and I will send a final invoice that includes the cost of the slides.

(The original foam lining has long since disintegrated, and has been replaced by a more-durable padding.)
